Revolutions may affect
dairy sales
It almost goes without saying that
revolution is not good for business.
But what’s happening in Egypt, at
least so far, is not revolution but a
market disruption, according to most
analysts.
“Egypt has been a buyer of cheese
for years and years. It’s been a very
good market for us,” said Tom Suber,
president of the U.S. Dairy Export
Corp. (USDEC). Year-to-date January
through November 2010, Egypt
imported $99 million worth of U.S.
dairy products.
The Middle East and North Africa
(which includes Egypt and Tunisia)
have imported $319 million worth
of U.S. dairy products, which is 108
percent of what they did in the same
period in 2009. The entire region
represents about 9 percent of U.S.
dairy exports. Egypt alone represents
roughly 3 percent of U.S. exports.
Disruption of the Egyptian market
will also cause some problems
for European and Oceania dairy
exporters as well, who have long sold
product into the North African nation.
If it does, it could back up some
amount of product globally.
A political disruption of markets
generally mean those markets
will stop buying out of fear that
distribution to stores will be stopped
or product confiscated by new political
power brokers. But once the political
situation calms down, orders usually
return to normal.
“That’s what happened in
Thailand after its recent political
turmoil,” Suber said. “But keep
in mind the Thailand experience
Governor wants to cut
state dairy inspectors
U.S., Mexico resolve
trucking issue
Michigan milk producers and
consumers are unhappy with Gov.
Rick Snyder’s plan to save money by
getting rid of the state’s dairy farm
inspectors and turning the job over to
the dairy industry.
Even industry representatives say
it’s the government -- not them -- that
should be doing the inspections.
The change, estimated to save
taxpayers $600,000 a year, is among
the recommendations in Snyder’s
proposed budget, in which he seeks
to erase a $1.4 billion deficit while
funding a $1.8 billion business tax cut.
Magellan Midstream
proceeds to next project
phase of potential
reversal and conversion
of Houston-to-El Paso
pipeline
TULSA, Okla.- Magellan Midstream
Partners, L.P. (NYSE:MMP - News)
announced that it is proceeding with
permitting and final engineering for
the potential reversal and conversion
of a portion of the partnership’s
Houston-to-El Paso pipeline to crude
oil service. The reversed pipeline
system would have a capacity of up
to 200,000 barrels per day. Recent
President Obama and President
Felipe Calderón of Mexico announced
in March that Mexico and the United
States found a path to resolve the
cross-border, long-haul trucking
dispute. The agreement will allow
for establishment of a “reciprocal,
phased-in program” that will
authorize both Mexican and U.S.
long-haul carriers to engage in cross-
border operations under the North
American Free Trade Agreement
(NAFTA).
