and spending on dairy grows at a
similar pace in the years ahead.
Many Chinese are lactose
intolerant, but the government
envisions better nutrition by
promoting nationwide consumption
of milk or yogurt. China’s premier,
Wen Jiabao, has famously
encouraged students to drink a glass
of milk a day.
“Only by speeding up the
construction of modern dairy farms
can we meet growing demand for
good-quality milk by the nation,” Vice
Minister of Agriculture Gao Hongbin
told state media.
To encourage growth of big farms,
the government has mandated that
the country’s top milk processors
-- those who buy from the farms and
turn raw milk into boxed milk, yogurt,
ice cream and cheese -- purchase a
substantial percentage of their milk
from big farms.
Deng Jiuquianq, chairman of
China Modern Dairy, the nation’s
largest milk producer, said, “We
have to solve our dairy problem
ourselves.”
China Modern Dairy is modeled
on America’s biggest dairies. It has
15 industrial farms and another four
under construction. The company
now has 128,759 head of cattle and is
importing about 22,000 more per year
until it reaches its goal of 300,000,
including imports and breeding,
around 2015.

Trucking company
owner pleads guilty
A Pennsylvania trucking company
owner, who told authorities he
conspired with a New Jersey cheese
company to sell tainted milk, pleaded
guilty last month to falsifying his
drivers’ records, according to the
U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Dean Landis, owner of D.A.
Landis Trucking Inc.., entered guilty
pleas on his and his company’s
behalf in connection with conspiracy
to falsify drivers’ daily logs between
2007 and 2009, according to a press
release from the Eastern District
of Pennsylvania. Sentencing is
scheduled for July 24, according to
news reports.
Landis also admitted to selling
milk that was supposed to be dumped
in a farmer’s manure pit because
of its levels of antibiotics, according
to court documents. Joseph G.
Lotito, 42, of Annandale and his
company, Lebanon Cheese Co., were
charged earlier this week by the U.S.
Attorney’s Office with causing the
interstate shipment of adulterated
ricotta cheese.
The cheese Lotito’s company sold
was unfit for human consumption,
because the milk used to make it
failed FDA-approved screening tests
for acceptable levels of antibiotics,
the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
Authorities said Landis told his
drivers to not let any rejected loads
get dumped, saying that he had “a
better way of disposing of them that I
can make a little profit on,” according
to court documents.
