Ohio hopes fracking
brings trucking jobs
The expected Ohio oil and gas
boom is going to make roads near
wells swarm with trucks like bees to
a hive, experts predict. It’s likely to
cause headaches for at least a few, but
for others the commotion is going to
sound like opportunity beckoning.
The hydraulic fracturing process
-- known as “fracking” -- alone can
require up to 1,000 truckloads of a
water, sand and chemical mix. Plus,
Ohio, with little in the way of oil
production historically, doesn’t have
the pipelines to transport oil away
from the well.
Several of the students at the
American Professional Truck Driving
School in rural Tuscarawas County
are optimistic that behind the wheel
is where they will find the long-lasting
and gainful employment that has
eluded them.
“That is one that seems to be
opening up for jobs,” pupil Bill
LaFollette, 60, said of oil- and gas-
related trucking. “I have had serious
problems even finding work in the
area, or the money is not there.”
LaFollette, a 60-year-old transplant
from Oregon, said he believes the
chances and the pay are real with
a commercial driver license (CDL),
thanks to oil and gas interests in the
Utica Shale.
“There’s a lot of jobs right now
that are just waiting for us to get out
of school,” said another student, Bill
Todd, a 48-year-old from Guernsey
County.
In the next year or two, drilling
activity is expected to intensify in the
Utica Shale, an organically rich rock
formation a mile or more beneath the
surface of much of eastern Ohio.

Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education
Program (OOGEEP), said Ohio needs

NTTC applauds NHTSA
ECS proposal
Girard Equipment, USA redesigns Texas facility
Arlington, Va. --National Tank
Truck Carriers (NTTC) has
announced that it supports the
National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) proposal
to require electronic vehicle stability
control (ECS) systems on new Class
8 tractors. NTTC represents the tank
truck industry including carriers and
equipment suppliers.
“The NTTC Executive Committee
passed a resolution in 2008 to petition
NHTSA to require ECS on all new
tractors used to pull tank trailers.
We believe that ECS and roll stability
control (RSC) systems can be tools
in reducing rollovers,” said NTTC
President John Conley. “NHTSA
asked us to not file the petition as
they were developing a rule for all
tractors. We are pleased to see that
rule published.”
